Sexting- sending naked or near-naked photos via text message- is a new trend among teenagers but at least two girls have commited suicide when things really went wrong.

Hope Witsell, a 13-year-old Florida girl, sent a topless photo of herself to a boy that she had a crush. Her classmates started bullying her when the photo spread and she had suffered too much emotional weight that she ultimately took her own life.

In a similar incident, 18-year-old Jesse Logan (pictured right) took her own life after nude pictures of her was passed around by e-mail. Her boyfriend forwarded her explicit photos following their split.

Sexting: a new trend

"Sexting"--is a familiar phenomenon among some teens, according to survey results released early this month by the Pew Research Center. It found that 4 percent of cell-owning teens ages 12 to 17 say they've sent sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images of themselves to someone else via text. 15percent, or 1 in 6, say they have received such material.

The survey also shows that while the exchange of nude images mostly takes place among romantic partners or potential partners of the same age, these images are also forwarded to non-partners or people in different age groups. And this is where things can get really ugly.
