Indian students are angry and concerned for their safety after an Indian student was brutally stabbed in Melbourne and another one burnt to death in New South Wales over the last few days.
Nitin Garg, 21, (pictured above) was brutally stabbed in the abdomen near a Melbourne restaurant where he worked part-time on Saturday night. It adds worries for Indians as they feel that Australian are racists and victimising Indian students.
“The stabbing… is brutal and I hope the Australian government will take necessary action and not force India to look to other ways. We will not tolerate it anymore,” External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said.
Mr Garg's uncle Mr Kumar says he is devastated by the loss of his nephew.
"Every time we were assured by your ministry, Australian, they were protecting Indians, but they have failed in protecting Indians," he said.
A burnt body found to be of Indian
A partially-burnt body found in Australia's New South Wales province last week is believed to be of a 25-year-old Indian national, police said today, in what might be the second fatality in a slew of vicious attacks on Indians.
Attacks on Indian students
The attacks on Indian students started in June last year, eliciting protests from India and putting bilateral ties under stress.
The Australian government has repeatedly denied any racist element in the attacks and has put in place a series of security measures to protect Indian students.
Nearly 100,000 Indian students study in Australia, contributing around $2 billion to the country's economy.
